Wow ~ what amazing blog candy!!
My thoughs on CASEing: I think it's ok, but one should give credit. I think thats part of what goes along with a site as big and awesome as SCS, to inspire one another, to give each other ideas, and/or to share with others something they would never have thought of and now they get to try a shot at it. I do not think one should CASE and then make a profit, even if you give credit, unless something is worked out with the original designer. There are some ideas, layouts, etc that are just a 'general' way of doing something though so you have to be careful of where to draw the line.
Just my thoughts!
I'm enjoying reading your blog!!

Oh what great blog candy... My thoughts on casing... I do like it when credit is given.. I only feel it is fair. I have had a card that was cased and the person did not give me credit and even amazingly stated she didn't case but the cards are just too much alike. Oh well it is just paper. But it still hurt my feelings so I try to give credit where credit is due....

CASEing...I don't believe I've ever CASEd a card yet...I think if I did I would definitely give credit, since it is someone else's art. As to being CASEd, Imitation is the best form of flattery right??? I think I would feel flattered, but at the same time a little hurt for not getting credit for it. If it's an absolutely original idea then you have to cite your source...if it's a complete accident that your card happens to look like someone elses then it's just that, and accident and not truly CASEd. oh yeah, great candy!!!

I don't mind someone CASEing me as long as proper credit is given. I think it is important to validate all the "blood, sweat and tears" that went into the original design.

Congrats on the success of your blog!!! Keep on posting your awesome projects!!!

Yum candy and lots of it! Thanks!
Casing is fine and good and cerdit should be given but occasionally an idea sticks in your head and you do not know exactly where it came from. What do you do then?

Caseing is ok, but please give the original artist the credit. I love SCS and all the ideas that are there. I would hate for anyone to stop giving their ideas because someone abused the priveledge. KWIM! Your blog candy is divine!

Oh Sarah, sign me up for blog candy...pick me, pick me!!! = )! I think casing is a great way to learn. In the unfortunate event that the original doesn't get credit, well, I like to think that it must have been an oversight. Most of the time, people go out of their way to give the orignal creator credit for the card being cased!! Pick me, pick me, pick me!!!!! = )

I am a total caser. I do not sell my cards, they are only given as gifts. I always tell people that I got the idea from my fav bloggers or from SCS. People should not get their panties in a twist if they have posted their stuff on the internet. It is all out there for everyone to see and use. I think if you get upset you need to re-evaluate your thinking. No one is making thousands of dollars from one little card and if they are and you have proof go after them. This is supposed to be about having fun. And there are some terrific card makers out there.

This looks great...late or not! I have tried to get away from CASEing since I need to challenge myself and get my own style. I don't really care if my cards are CASEd but I always give credit if I knowingly CASE (which I haven't done in over a year!). What really bothers me is when people CASE my blog! Grins!

Cheryl KVD said...

Hello! I don't belong to SCS, but I think that if someone is going to CASE, they should give credit. The people that put their stuff on a public website should know that there is a possibility that their stuff will get CASEd too. Heck, I would be HONORED if someone cased my stuff!!!
Thanks!

Hi Sarah! I just wanted to say hi! I'm about 2 hours SOUTH of you on Hwy 17!
As for CASING, I think if you KNOW who you CASEd, you should give credit, but I know I'm bad about seeing something, then MONTHS down the road copying it (not usually exact) and not remembering WHERE I saw it or WHO originally made it. I try to at least mention that I MAY have seen it on SCS or in certain magazines. I also would be flattered if someone CASEd me (mine aren't ALL that good....) even if they don't give me credit! Imitation is the best compliment :D

I may get inspiration or learn a certain technique from the SCS website but have never cased someone elses card. If someone ever chose to case one of my creations, it would only hurt me if they had it published as their own and it was identical to mine. But anytime we put something on the web, unfortunately it's free for the taking. Thankfully, I think the scrapping community really seems like an honest & friendly group, so most of the time things run smoothly and we all have fun sharing ideas with one another. Your blog candy is fabulous - thanks for the chance to win:)

ktaylorteach2 said...

Hi! Your Blog candy is soooo generous!
CASEing is fine with me as long as credit is given to the original creator....ideas get passed around so much on SCS it is amazing how the "seven degrees of separation" works even with CASEing! I found a card that looked so much like one I'd made and the credit was given to someone else...when I checked out that person's card, they gave credit to yet ANOTHER stamper...when I checked THAT card...what do you know....they linked to the card I'd made!! That was pretty cool!
I like to think that when someone CASEs, they give credit and when they don't give credit, it is an honest mistake or just a crazy coincidence!
If a card were CASED and then published and someone profited from the publication, that would be a bummer but I'd like to think that people who submit for publication do so with their original designs.
Bottom line: I believe in the goodness of the stamping community!
:)
Thanks for the great question too!

What a blog candy! totally awesome!
I think CASEing is fine as long as the credit is given to the right person. Basically we create something because we are inspired in one way or another. You might like a color on one card, a particular layout of the other..and so there is no such a correct definition of CASEing.
But using someone else's work to gain financially would be wrong. There is one place where the credit ought to be given.

WOW!!!! I am sooo excited about this GREAT blog candy!!!

As to the CASEing...here's how I feel: I ALWAYS give credit if I knowingly CASE something. If I CASE something EXACTLY, I don't even post it on SCS, because I feel that I would be taking comments/appreciation away from the original designer, and that is unfair. If I LOVE their idea, and change a one or a few things, I will let everyone know!

If someone CASEs me (a rare occasion)... That's a tougher issue! On the one hand, what a compliment! But like I mentioned before, it's only proper to say it! If they mention that they don't remember who, then I might say "hey, that's ME! Thanks for the honor of caseing me!" Something like that.

Unsure what to do if they don't say ANYTHING at all & pass the work off as their own.

JMHO!

I have never CASED off SCS-but I have used ideas from my local stamp store and always give credit. Recently, I was blog surfing and found a card EXACTLY like one of mine even down to the phrase. all she didnt do was steal my photo. but what can you do? life goes on.

What wonderful blog candy you are offering !
I don't mind casing every now and them but try not to for the most part , I try to use the SCS challenges instead as they really help inspire me . If I do case someone I try to give them credit if I remember whom it was I cased from , otherwise I would then write , if it is you I cased let me know so I can give you credit . I look at and comment on so many cards on SCS that it is always possible to case some one and not even realize it , because an idea stuck in your head that you saw . I have had a few people PM me and ask permission to case and I am always honored that someone would want to case me .

Robyn said...

Congrats on all your hits. I think caseing is fine and credit should of course be given but sometimes you forget where you cased a card from and then I know that I would just be pleased to know that I inspired someone with or without the recognition. Thanks.

That is some very generous blog candy there! I feel that casing someone's idea is a compliment to them AS LONG as credit is given. Granted there are many cards out there that are similar, a lot based off of sketches. But when you can flat out see that a particular card is a copy and no name is mentioned or thanking them for the inspiration, that's just rude and basically stealing. I've CASE'd my share of cards and if I upload them I give credit but wouldn't even think about submitting them to magazines which some people have said has happened to them. It's an interesting topic and there are several different views about what's stealing and what's not. Thanks for sharing all your great creations!

I think people should take it as an honor that someone liked their design so much that they wanted to duplicate it. I also don't sell my cards, but I do host classes. So I think if people are going to post their creations for the world to see then they need to realize that this places it into fair game for casing, just as people do with pictures from magazines and books. And they should feel honored that others are enjoying their work rather than feel offended if their name wasn't mentioned.

Karen Gladney said...

I take it as a honor if someone cases my work but would like the person who cases it to give me the credit. If I case I always try and give credit to the person who created it. I think it is only right. My feelings don't get hurt if someone doesn't give me credit but I do think that it is only a matter of respect to do it. I do think that there are times that people go through the gallery at SCS and then come up with a design and don't even realize that they are copying someone else work. They just look at so many designs that one they like sticks in their head.

Tks for the chance of winning such great blog candy.

I belong to the school that if you post your stuff on the www, it's free for the taking. Doesn't bother me in the least if people 'lift' my cards.. I get ideas here and there, but would never lift a complete card. So I may see something on a card done with ribbon, or a flower idea, etc.. and may bring that onto my cards, kwim? I think there are bigger things to worry about than if someone lifted one of your cards and didn't give credit. Kwim? Everyone gets their ideas from somewhere, so who's to say whether the card is completely original to begin with.. kwim?

Pat said...

If the card is an exact copy then the original artist should be given credit. If a design has inspired your creation then you should give credit to the original artist, also. Be kind and give the original artist credit. If it happened to me...It would make me sad, but you have to think of it as a compliment that someone liked your design so much as to want to make one just like your original! Life is too short to sweat the small stuff! Congrats and thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas!

So loving your giveaway. I think that if you case a card you should give chedit. But I know sometimes it does happen where you forget. I don't believe I would be angry if this happened to me. We all share the same passion! And if I can help someone be creative I would be happy. Thanks for the chance.

Amazing candy! Thanks for the chance! About CASEing.... I have CASEd and I've tried to always give credit where it's due.... but sometimes the idea probably is in my head sue to something I've seen and though I should give credit, I have no idea where I've seen it. Does that make sense? So although I do believe in credit being given, I know that I am guilty of not hvaing given credit. And I am sorry. Lately, I've not been CASEing at all. It feels good to come up with my own stuff. Thanks for the chance!

Congrats on your hits! You are celebrating with some AWESOME candy here! YOU ROCK! I just love your journal. You are going to make 1 stamper very happy when this shows up on in their mailbox....and I hope it's ME ME ME! My thoughts on CASEing is...If you CASE give credit where credit is due. If you forgot who it was mention it and maybe there will be that stamper that remembers and you can edit your post and give CREDIT where CREDIT is DUE! My feelings are that blogs and SCS are sites that you share the same passion and get ideas and inspirations from, not to take someones creative artwork.
Thanks for a chance at your AWESOME sweet candy.

congrats on the success of your blog! i totally understand the ol' craft fund running dry..mine is right now...whaaaa!! (i NEED those Christmas cards and elzybells images!)
CASEing: i am honored when someone cases my cards. however when they do not give credit (especially if it's an exact copy), it does make me wonder if they are making an honest mistake, or if they are calling it "their own". on scs, it has happened to me several times, and i politely (if i see it or am notified by friends) pm the person to please add me to the credit, always giving them the benefit of the doubt in my wording. what really gets my goat, though is when photos are "harvested" from blogs etc. for financial gain on others websites (personal SU website galleries for instance), which has also happened to me. when they put it in THAT type of gallery that is titled, "look at my artwork", then that's just a blatant "steal" as far as i'm concerned. i guess that's my 2 cents that has multiplied itself into my 10 bucks!! ;)

Anonymous said...

Congrats on all the hits and thanks for sharing your ideas. On casing - definitely credit should always be given. When it's not, I think it's best to give the person the benefit of the doubt. I would certainly PM them if I felt it was a 100% and ask that credit be given. Otherwise - if they're like me - I am so addicted to blogs, galleries, magazines and see so many cards, that sometimes when I make something it's hard to remember where I saw the original that generated the idea (weeks later sometimes) and sometimes it's even hard to know if it is really MY idea or if the lightbulb finally went off from something I saw weeks ago! I think most crafters are very caring people who love to share so take it as a compliment!! :) Thanks!

Erin said...

I think caseing is ok.I do try to always give credit. If I can't remember or figure out who I'm caseing I generally just don't put it on the galleries or on my blog. I won't send something for publication I cased.

If it happened to me I would just roll my eyes, perhaps tell DH and let him tell me "That's poop" but then I'd get over it. I mean if someone cased something off my blog and got it published. If they just cased it and made a card for their mom or what not then I wouldn't care at all. :)

And as far as general layout and cool color choices I don't really think we can call that caseing, I mean who is the first person to put a ribbon across where two DP's join? Should we all be crediting her? I think it could be a bit much.

I think most people have respect and are cool in this hobby and so I don't worry too much about it. :)

Can we enter more than once? If so, count me in again (pick me, pick me)!! More thoughts on casing...I love it when someone cases me and give me credit for my original design...makes me feel like a vip in the spotlight, if only for a moment!! We all look at so many cards & designs and should be extra careful to give those who give us inspiration the kudos and spotlight that they deserve = ) !!!

You have a wonderful blog. My thoughts on this is that if you choose to post a photo of a card you made on a public web site, you can expect people to want to copy it and you should expect that but should they take advantage and turn it into a money maker they are wrong and should give credit to the original designer.

I may take a bit or piece of an idea when I see something I like, but would never case an entire card. The main reason I enjoy this craft is because it allows my creativity to flow. If I ever come up with a card so clever that I wouldn't want anyone to case it, I definitely wouldn't post it on the internet. Thank for offering the fantastic goodies!

Hi Sarah! Thanx for the chance for the t'riffic blog candy, and congrats on 5K+ visits!

As for CASEing, I'm with those who figure imitation's the sincerest form of flattery. When viewing 1000's of cards it's possible folkes get ideas from and then forget where they saw them, in which case CASEing without credit may be unintentional. I think it's good for sites to list copyright info in the small print somewhere ... maybe on the footer of the page ... so that it's crystal clear what's permissible and what's not so that folkes become educated on the subject.

later, alligator!

In regards to CASEing, I am totally flattered if someone cases me. It is nice to be recognized and should be done so if possible. By this I mean that sometimes you get inspired by somebodies card and you totally forget where you saw it. In this case I think it would be nice just to mention that this is something you saw somewhere and give a general thanks.
I would love to receive your awesome goodies in my mailbox.

Sarah, I love the card you posted today! I love casing cards from SCS, as there is so much awesome talent there. I think someone casing is the sincerest form of flattery. I appreciate it when I am given credit, and think that is what should be done. However, if it isn't, I don't fret too much about it. Life's too short. Let's all be nice and play fair!

congratulations and thanks for offering your blog candy! I linked to you off SCS today for the first time.

CASEing is a great way to expand on our creativity, I love to look at something and rebuild it in my mind with what I have. I hope I'm never quilty of not giving credit to the original maker when I CASE, I'd feel terrible. There's so much that goes into each creation that everyone should get the credit due them. I love the inspiration I get from looking around on SCS and everyone's blogs.

Thanks again for the great blog candy and sharing your awesome talent with us!

Congrats on the milestone! Your cards are lovely!

On casing... I think it is a valuable tool for learning. I was a stamping newbie when I found SCS and just couldn't start a card -didn't know how to! With the inspiration of the amazing work on SCS I was able to get over that creative "hump" if you will. I always gave credit.

I recently came across a card in the gallery that was CASED from me that didn't give credit or even mention it was CASED from anyone. Honestly, I was a bit put off. It was almost an exact copy of my card and no mention! I didn't do anything, not sure what I should have done... it's a tough one.

Great blog candy thanks for the giveaway. Hugs,

Awesome blog candy - congratulations on your hit count.
I'm in the CASEing camp of "if you put it on the internet you take your chances". It is definitely the courteous thing to give credit, and most cardmakers would be flattered, but if credit is not given it's not worth the energy to fret over. Just my $0.02

Ila said...

Wow!! Great blog candy!!
As far as casing goes....to me it is a high form of flattery...if they want to mention my creation...well that would be flattering too...but not necessary...at all. I wouldn't want someone to submit my exact creation to a magazine or contest....But I have to say we see things all the time and don't remember where they came from...ideas don't come from nothing...there is always an idea that probably came from some one else's creation in the first place.
I think we need to be careful not to make so many limitations as to slow down progress...or rather have people afraid to create because of it....everyone starts somewhere...and someone is always going to go a little farther or better on a creation by what they see and compare it to.

Unknown said...

I agree with everyone's sentiments. If we case a card it is only polite, and fair to give credit to the artist. There are so many wonderful artists out there, I appreciate when I look through the gallery and someone acknowledges that they cased the card, and even gives the link. I always look at the original card too. Enjoy your blog too by the way. Thanks Gloria

You are too generous with the blog candy, but I would love to win it anyway!!! I love SCS and case many of the cards their, but have never posted one to the site. I really think a person should give credit for the ideas they used, even if it vaguely looks like the original. Maybe some don't think it is a case if they only use certain elements. I enjoy reading your blog and watching the countdown.

Libby Hickson said...

Hmm well I hope there's nothing wrong with CASEing because I do it A LOT - and of course I always give credit. CASEing (and then posting!) without credit is definitely bad form in my book. And some cards that I've CASE'ed pretty blatantly I might put on my blog (with credit!) but I don't usually post them on SCS. I think I'd be pretty annoyed if somebody CASE'ed me without giving credit! I'm glad you left a comment on my blog tonight - I didn't have you in my reader, but I am adding you now! Your cards are gorgeous!!

Cat said...

I'm looking forward to reading all the comments here. If someone posts a card on SCS or other public forum, they should expect that someone else would love it and possibly copy it. Personally, I get lots of ideas online and don't usually remember exactly where I obtained that idea. If I exactly copied something, however, I should know who the original artist was and be able to respectfully note it. Copying someone's work and passing it off as my own, is just plain wrong. I wouldn't do it.

If someone CASEs my work, I'm honored. CASE away! :)

Great candy offer - you're a sweetie! I love that you added all your favorite things (images, cards, etc).

How sweet of you to share these treats with us. Whenever someone has a great idea, I start seeing the idea make the rounds for a few months until another great idea is thrown out there for everyone to copy:) It's not really fair, but that seems to be the way it is. The original designer may have a bit of recognition at first, but will eventually be forgotten. The way I look at it, the people that come up with these amazing ideas in the first place are true artists and need to publish "How To Books" so they can get paid for their creativity by these card clones:) Otherwise whatever is put on the internet is pretty much given out for free and more than likely cased.

Anonymous said...

I think caseing is a great way to let your fellow artists know how much you love their work (and if you are stuck it takes the frustration out of coming up with something new and different)...with that being said, I do agree that the original artist should receive the praise. Especially since it could have taken weeks for her to get to the finished product. Always give thanks to where the idea came from! Lisa K

I should say I always try to give credit. There are time where I've seen something and after a while it'll come to the front and off I go to make it. When posting, for the life of me I haven't been able to find it. In this case I made sure to admit the original wasn't mine but I am such a spazz I can't remember where I found it!!!
